WELLNESS WEDNESDAY- Healthy Holiday Baking Chick style!

Hey Chicks!

Happy Wednesday!  We are now into week 1 of our “Holiday Express” 2 Week Bootcamp before we take a little hiatus for the holidays (next bootcamps start Jan 9th!).  One thing we have been chatting alot about in class is how do you not blow all of your progress while you are off and still enjoy the holidays.   Now the working out is 10% of the battle.  The only thing that will save your waistline is during these times is to watch what you eat. We are not saying don’t enjoy the holidays but there are some little tricks to make it healthier.

Today’s post is inspired by one of my Danforth bootcamp chicks who loves baking..but want to make it healthier for her fam and friends. So chick, here are my best tips on how to cut down on the baking calories so you can enjoy some treats without totally blowing your eating plan!

Tip 1 – Cut the Sugar

Most recipes call for a ton of sugar. You can usually cut it down by 1/4 to 1/2 without any noticeable difference. For each tablespoon you cut out you save 48 calories. Just don’t fall into the trap of substituting sugar for agave or maple syrup thinking it’s healthier. It may be more “natural”, but it still contains just as much sugar and calories.

Tip 2 – Use Whole Grain Flours

This boosts the fibre content of your recipe. Any excuse to add in more fibre is fabulous!

Tip 3 – Cut the Fat

You can sub applesauce, pumpkin puree or bananas for oil in most baked goods like muffins and cakes. It adds moistness and flavour, and saves a ton of calories and fat grams.

Tip 4 – Be Sneaky!

Sneaking in pumpkin, flax meal, nuts and dried fruits add lots of nutrients and fibre to your baking.

Tip 5 – Make it Mini

Mini cookies, mini muffins, and mini cupcakes instead of a whole cake provide instant portion control, and they are oh so cute!

Tip 6 – Use “Sweet” Spices

When baking, use “sweet” spices, like vanilla and almond extracts, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and allspice. These add fab flavour without calories, and smell so yummy!

Tip 7 – Use Google!

You can find a healthier version of any recipe in minutes online. Don’t be afraid to have fun and try out new recipes!

Sure there are certain recipes you just don’t want to mess with, but why not start making some new healthy traditional holiday recipes for your family? And please share any fave healthy tips you have, we’ll add to the list!

Make today a fabulous one!
