Top 5: Gluten Free, Low-Carb Substitutes for Bread

Hey Chicks,

Happy Wednesday!

Today I wanted to post about a question I actually got from one of my chicks in my Toronto Danforth boot camp class last night. She told me she is trying to cut back on processed carbs and asked me a question I get alot, “What can I eat instead of bread?”

Personally, I try to avoid bread and processed carbohydrates.  Even though whole grain bread is the better choice over white bread, it is still a processed food and everyone has a different tolerance to how many carbohydrates and how their body processes it.  Bread causes me to feel puffy, sluggish and “backed up” which is probably due to my tolerance to gluten (my naturopath had advised me against eating gluten awhile ago)

That is not to say I don’t ever eat it but I try to really limit my consumption.  Bread is more just the “vehicle” to transport all the yummy fillings and there are so many other awesome, healthy, natural options out there that you can still stuff with your favorite healthy proteins and vegetables.  Here are some of my favorites:

TOP 5 : Gluten Free and Low-Carb Options instead of bread.

  1. Portobello Mushrooms – fill them with ground meat, veggies, or use as a burger bun.
  2. Lettuce Wraps – stuff with your fave sandwich filling, roll and eat. Delish!
  3. Cabbage Wraps – this is one of my Sis’ faves for my nieces. It holds better than lettuce and has a super crunch texture. Try green, purple, napa or chinese – yummy!
  4. Flax Seed Crust – Instead of pizza crust, try a flax seed crust. Full of healthy fats and fibre, it’s a great alternative to bread.
  5. Cauliflower Rice – While not a substitute for bread, it’s a great alternative to white rice or grains. Use a food processor with the grating blade to grate it into little shards of “rice”. Sautee in some coconut oil (it stands the high heat much better than olive oil) and use as you would rice.

Cauliflower rice - looks just like real rice, and tastes awesome!

It may seem weird at first, but try it for a week switching out all of your bread for these low carb alternatives and see how you feel. (I’ll be you’ll feel a lot better!)

What is your fave low-carb bread alternative?

Have a fab day,

Your Head Chick, Laura xo
