FITNESS FRIDAY – Burning calories skate style!

Hey Chicks!

Well I know that it hasn’t been a real Winter Wonderland here in Toronto but I was lucky enough that the last time I visited my family back in Ottawa, the Rideau Canal was frozen and calling my name. Did you know this Canal is actually known as the longest outdoor rink in the world -cool huh?!

Getting my skate on!

This canal is 8 km one from one end to the other so if you skate the whole rink you rack up 16 km skate and a mean workout for your legs, booty and heart! I ended up burning 843 calories with my 2 hour skate!

Now please keep in mind though that even though it is a long skate and a great workout that still does not warrant eating a Beaver Tail on the ice so STAY AWAY – it is not worth it chicks!! I asked someone if I could take a pic of their Maple Beavertail to show you what you need to stay away from LOL!

A Canadian tradition..but is it worth it for the calories?

While skating along I managed to try to race the BF, skate backwards at high speeds (didn’t happen LOL) and re-visit my old school figure skating moves. Yes, that is right back in the day I was a figure skater, even though today I am not so coordinated back when I was younger I lucked out with a little coordination skills and fancy footwork. I even managed to win a trophy or two – participation ones but still they were mine LOL.

I went for a skate to be sure I not only got my sweat on over the weekend but also some fresh air and sweet Vitamin D that we have been lacking with all this gloomy weather.

With this warmer weather kicking around I wonder for all you peeps who are not lucky enough to be snowbirds and love the outdoor activities, what have you been doing to stay active outside?
