MAMA CHICK MONDAY – Let your kids make healthy choices!

Hey Chicks!

It’s Mama Chick Monday and today we have our Ottawa Orleans Bootcamp Instructor (aka Chick Sergeant!) and Mama of 2 boys, Kristy sharing with us how she has been getting her kids to eat healthy and love it!

FIT CHICKS: What is your favorite healthy snack right now for your kids that they love?

Kristy: My boys favorite healthy snack, at the moment, is cheese…the size of a babybel, and any fruit to go with it…they absolutely love fruit! They also love almonds at the moment.

FIT CHICKS: Do you have any tips to get your kids to eat healthier foods?

Kristy: I have to say though, I’ve been pretty lucky with my boys, they have always eaten what I’ve put in front of them. I didn’t really give them a choice. They would always eat if they were hungry….and the always are! Right from the get go, they had very healthy choices put in front of them. Every now and then, to make them feel like they were choosing, I would give them a choice between 2 things, but they were 2 healthy things.  EX: yogurt or applesauce, apple or orange. This way, they still felt like they were making the choice for themselves. I always tell them that fruit and veggies make them stronger….so now they tell me that!!

FIT CHICKS: How do you make sure your kids are still eating healthy when outside of the home or when you can’t make their meals and snacks?

Kristy: The grandparents will definitely give them treats, they say that’s their job…..but both my kids and the grandparents know it’s a treat, and doesn’t happen all the time. The grandparents understand I am very health conscious and they respect that.

My kids don’t go to Daycare, so I don’t have to deal with that, but if you do…always make sure your provider understands how you feel about the foods that are given to your kids. They usually provide menus for the day, so take a look at it. If you have issues, let them know. They are your kids and they are going to be there 5 days a week, for at least 2 snacks and a meal…maybe even 2, so make sure you’re vocal about it. As for the schools, luckily they are very health conscious, so that helps. Everything you send has to be healthy, with no candy or chocolate.

At the end of day, if you present healthy choices from the start it will be easier. You can give them choices, there is nothing wrong with that, just make them healthy ones to choose from.

Remember, if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t let your kids!

Thanks, Kristy, for sharing with us!  And if you have any extra tips, please post below.

Have a fab day,
