Hey chicks!
In celebration of National Vegan Month, we’re going to break down the meaning behind some of the different dietary lifestyles.
Vegan
So what does it mean to be a vegan? A good way to remember is the “no eye” rule. A vegan chick doesn’t consume or use products that came from something that has eyes. In terms of food, that means no meat, no egg, no dairy and other products that appear to be vegan-friendly but aren’t. For example, gelatin is made of animal tissue, bone and skin – so no jell-o for our vegan chicks!
She also likely doesn’t wear leather, fur or wool and won’t use products that are made with animal by-products or tested on animals. As with any lifestyle, the range may vary, so always check with your vegan pal!
Vegetarian
Vegetarians are chicks who don’t eat meat, but there are lots of variations!
Lactarian – This chick will eat dairy items, as long as the items are gelatin and rennet free. She might love our Portabello Mushroom Burgers!
Ovo-vegetarian (eggetarian) – This chick won’t eat dairy, but will eat eggs
Lacto-ovo vegetarian – You guessed it! This chick will eat dairy as well as eggs!
Fruitarian – Although less common, these chicks only eat fruit or 75% of their diet is fruit. Fruitarians need to be sure to get lots of support from a GP or naturopath as it can be super tricky to get all necessary nutrients.
Pescetarian – No meat for this girl, but she’ll eat fish. She may or may not eat dairy and eggs. It’s always best to check!
Omnivore
These chicks eat it all – fruit, veggies, grains, dairy, meat, fish… !
Raw Foodist
Also known as the “living food diet,” these chicks believe that they obtain higher digestive enzymes and higher nutritious value by eating only raw foods. This means no cooking, boiling, etc. It sounds simple, but these chicks are committed!
There are definitely more out there, but it’s a good place to start! Remember, everybody approaches food differently but the most important piece is to get your vital nutrients in! And along with healthy eating, you want to make sure to get a good workout in, too! Be sure to sign up for next session of bootcamp classes to help you stay on track!
Mmmmm….All this food talk is making us hungry!
