Hey chicks!
Following our questions on Facebook, we’re going to give you a lesson in “Organics 101!”
What is organic?
Organic produce is grown without the use of chemical spray and pesticides and is not genetically-modified. So prominent has this method of cultivation become that you can buy organics online now, as the products of these methods are preponderating every day.
How can you tell?
Easy trick! If you are in the produce aisle and worried that maybe a regular apple snuck into the organic pile, just check the sticker! The numbers on the stickers (PLU code) actually tell you how your food is grown.
- If it starts with a “4″ then you are eating a conventional piece of fruit/vegetable.
- If it starts with a “9″ then it’s organic!
- You might not see it a lot, but if it starts with an “8,” it means that it’s genetically modified. This isn’t enforced though, so just because you don’t see the “8″ doesn’t mean it’s not genetically modified. Confusing, we know!
Do I have to buy ALL organic produce?
While it’s always great to choose organic, there are some produce that are more impacted by pesticides than others. So what should you try to buy organic? THE DIRTY DOZEN!
